The UK R2 Builders is a group of Star Wars fans in the UK who build replica R2-D2 droids, along with many other variations. We have many members throughout the UK with either completed droids or droids in the process of being built. The club is all about the building process and learning new skills along the way. Not only that, a lot of members love to take their droids out in public to Comic Conventions and such like, raising money for charity whilst we do it. We have raised many thousands of pounds for charity over the years
A few members have also had the opportunity to do more personal events such as weddings to deliver the rings down the aisle, or hospitals to visit sick children or attend their bell ringing celebration.
As a club, we also have a very good working relationship with Disney/LucasFilm and have on occasion been asked to provide droids for official events such as adverts or red carpets, or even be in the background of the films and TV shows.
The group was founded in 2009 when several of the online builders realized they were not the only builders in the UK. Our first event was at Milton Keynes, Don's Stadium with an attendance of around 5 builders. Since that event, every year more and more builder have emerged as have the number of events. We are now attending many events a year in the UK and even a few in Europe.
Over the years the club has grown and grown with over 100 members in the UK, all building droids of various forms.
Recently, we realised a lot of our members were doing droids other than astromechs and decided to create a new group that could serve as an umbrella to bring them all together. This is the Droidbuilders UK. We still have the UK R2 Builders, but also bring along BB8 Builders, Pitdroids, MSE droids, and anything else from the Star Wars universe.
